Martin Schlenhardt

Martin Schlenhardt, 87, of Huntley, passed away May 3, 2024, at home surrounded by his family, who expressed their love and said their farewells. Martin will be reunited with his wife, Hilma, brother Joseph Schlenhardt and his parents, who proceeded him in death. Martin was born in Ruma, Servia (former Yugoslavia) to Anton and Maria. He spent most of his childhood growing up in Linz, Austria. Martin and his family left Austria on a long journey by ship to America. Upon arriving at Ellis Island, the family boarded a train to Chicago, where they started a new life. His first job was at Kay Guitar Factory in Chicago, where he met his wife Hilma. They purchased a home near Wrigley Field and started a family. Together they raised and loved their two daughters, Trudy (Mark) Brinkmann, and Karin (Jim) Bouse. He equally loved and cherished his grandchildren and was known as “Opa” to Matthew (Rachel), Eric (Shanen), Veronica, Mitchell and Margaret; and great grandson Weston. He was loved and known to many of their friends and family as Opa. Martin was a member and involved in the American Aid Society of German Descendants. He enjoyed bringing his family to: Oktoberfest, Mayfest, Schlacht Fest and many German events. He loved to share his German Heritage with family and friends. He kept in close contact with relatives in Europe and traveled several times to visit them. Martin was a talented Cabinet Maker by profession with Carpenters Union Local 1027. After his wife Hilma, passed away he met Herta, who he loved, adored and spent the remainder of his life with in Huntley. There they were active in Sun City, going to their outdoor concerts, to the pool, dances, trips, and members of the German Club. Together they enjoyed traveling and spending their winters in Florida. They both enjoyed going to the beach and soaking up the sun, long drives, shopping and going out to dinner. Family was top priority for both Martin and Herta. There was never a family gathering without the two of them. Martin always lit up the room with his warm smile and cheerful heart. He was friendly to everyone and enjoyed sharing his stories of growing up and his experiences. Martin and his stories will be missed. Services will be held to honor Martin’s Life on Wednesday, May 15th, 2024, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley. Visitation will be prior to mass at the church at 9 A.M.
